Things to know about the Golf 1 Cabrio

The Golf 1 Cabrio is the most frequently built convertible in Germany. It can certainly be called a cult convertible. Some owners call it a strawberry basket because of its roll bar in the middle.

The Golf 1 convertible top essentially consists of four parts. With this article you are only buying the outer skin.

1. The soft top linkage.
2. The headliner.
3. The intermediate mat.
4. The outer skin.

The Golf 1 convertible top linkage is widely regarded as indestructible.

A workshop cannot repair such a Golf 1 convertible top linkage. If necessary, the headliner of the Golf 1 convertible top should be replaced when the top is changed, as it is attached from above underneath the top mat and the linkage. It is very difficult or even impossible to replace the headliner in the second step after replacing the soft top. The original headliner is made of vinyl (PVC with knitted fabric). Today, it is better to install textile headliner fabric, it is simply more decorative.

The intermediate mat, also known as the upholstery mat or insulating mat, is made of rubberized fibres in the original Golf 1 convertible top. It is better to install the Dralon mat used in later convertibles. It has no disadvantages, it is just considerably cheaper. The new material was certainly not chosen without reason. This upholstery mat is wrapped in a cloth and is fixed to the Golf 1 convertible top linkage.

The outer skin is the part of the Golf 1 convertible top that is visible from the outside. This can be fitted in PVC or the high-quality Dralon convertible top fabric.

The Golf 1 Cabrio was built by the Karmann company in Osnabrück from spring 1979 to summer 1987. This company ceased to exist completely in 2009. The parts of the company were absorbed by several companies in the automotive industry or were dissolved.

There is no direct successor.

The Golf 1 Cabrio was improved several times during its production period. However, the soft top cover of the Golf 1 Cabrio soft top is the same for all of them. Sometimes the linkage was changed with regard to the locking mechanism, other times the position and guidance of the wire rope was optimized. For example, the linkage was changed quite early on so that the top lay flatter at the rear when open.

The convertible itself was given another major facelift around 1988 in the style of the then current Golf 2.

Later, a hydralic drive for the Golf 1 convertible top was added. Even this improvement did not change the exterior dimensions of the soft top cover.

Three wire ropes are used to install the Golf 1 soft top. A strong wire rope fixes the Golf 1 convertible top to the rear of the vehicle, while two further lightweight wire ropes hold the side seam of the Golf 1 convertible top at window height. If the convertible top were to be pulled up sideways by the wind while driving, it would be very loud in the car.
